Avalon Theatre Update on Closure (March 23, 2021)
Dear Friends of the Avalon,
It’s hard to believe that March 13 marked the one-year anniversary of the Avalon’s closing due to the Covid pandemic. That unhappy milestone, along with Mayor Bowser’s welcome announcement last week authorizing movie theaters to reopen with a limited capacity (no more than 25 people), seems like a good time to update our Avalon community on how the Avalon is doing and what is being planned.
Welcome to Avalon at Seven Meadows Located in Fort Bend County, Texas, this premier gated community consists of 299 homes on private streets, 28 acres of lakes and fountains, and a park with playground and a junior-size soccer field. The Resistance: Avalon (also known as Avalon) is a game of deception, deduction, and secret identities. Every player will be given a player card to determine which ‘side’ they are on, with their goal being to win three out of five rounds of the game by passing or failing missions. The rules for this game are somewhat difficult to summarize.
While we’re eager to reopen and resume our role as the premier DC film center, we will not be reopening immediately. With the increasing availability of vaccines and further relaxation of capacity limitations, we do foresee the reopening in the near future, hopefully by this summer.
We are not reopening our theater to the general public until we are confident in both your safety and the safety of our staff. While many of our patrons have already been vaccinated, much of our staff does not yet qualify for vaccination appointments. We will not reopen until sufficient members of our staff have had the chance to be fully vaccinated. In addition, we are undergoing a number of upgrades that must be completed before we can reopen to the general public including a full assessment of our HVAC air filtration systems, repair to the iconic Avalon 1 ceiling mural, implementing a reserved seating system to facilitate social distancing and installation of protective barriers on the café counter. We will also be implementing improvements to our membership program including a new online portal where members can purchase their tickets and manage their Avalon membership.
In the meantime, we are hopeful that we can soon begin offering private theater rentals. While we await reopening, Virtual Avalon continues to bring a great selection of curated independent films right to your home. Our current offerings include several Oscar nominees as well as festival favorites and critics’ picks.
During this closure, we’ve developed creative ways to continue offering our free Cinema Classroom at the Avalon student education program by connecting teachers and students to free screenings of films such as Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and a recorded Zoom conversation with a panel of HBCU graduates.
Through a combination of the overwhelming community response that drove the success of the Campaign to Sustain the Avalon, support from the DC Government and our own grant-writing efforts we remain on solid financial footing. Because we expect a slow recovery, contributions are always welcome and needed! In fact, we have over 60 new Avalon 1 seats still available for the purchase of personalized seat plaques! Reserve your seat plaque today.
We thank you again and always for your kind words, contributions, and encouragement this past year. We are looking forward to coming together again as a community to enjoy the experience that only the big screen can provide!

Updated Saturday, March 14 at 2pm:
Dear Friends of the Avalon,
For the safety and health of our patrons and staff and to comply with the March 13, 2020 order issued by the DC Department of Health, the Avalon is temporarily closed, effective immediately.
During this time, the theater and café will be closed to the public. Our Business Office staff will continue to operate although most of the staff will work remotely. We feel it is especially important, in spite of the potential for significant loss of revenue, that we make every effort to continue to pay our dedicated front line staff, including our hourly café staff.
The Avalon will still be accepting financial contributions and memberships online or by mail as well as online gift card purchases. Public support is especially appreciated during this time and will help the Avalon to sustain itself during this disruption in our normal operations. You can renew your membership, order gift cards and make donations online.
We appreciate your support and understanding in this unprecedented time and will share our plans as they develop. And, of course, we look forward to welcoming back our patrons when it is determined it is safe to do so.
If you have any further questions, please contact us at info@theavalon.org. We will have limited phone coverage at the Business Office and none at the theater. Please continue to check this page for ongoing updates, sign up for our email list, or follow us on social media:
Stay safe and we’ll see you soon.
